What is PrEP?
PrEP or Pre-exposure prophylaxis is a course of antiretroviral HIV medications to prevent HIV negative people from acquiring the HIV infection (Human Immunodeficiency Virus.) PrEP is for people who are at a higher risk of HIV infection and provides near 100% protection. Taken as a once-a-day tablet with or without food PrEP protects you from a virus which is currently incurable and can result in severe damage to immune systems or even death if left untreated. Even while using PrEP it is recommended to use a condom which will provide extra protection against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections/diseases (STI's/STD's)
How does PrEP work?
PrEP works by stopping an enzyme called HIV reverse transcriptase which blocks HIV from replicating which in turn makes the infection unable to establish itself and is then cleared from the body. Please see our HIV PrEP video for a further explanation on how PrEP works.
